We will describe various concepts for intensifying catalytic reactions and reactors, including bifunctional materials and cascade reactions, fairly mature by now microtechnology, hybrids of reactors and separations, and multifunctional reactors including static micromixers and microheat exchangers (spatial domain), periodic operation (temporal domain), and use of alternate energy forms such as microwaves. These concepts will be elucidated with examples taken from biomass, shale gas, and ammonia chemistry.
