The roots of modern multivariate analysis trace their roots back to the 1901 work of Karl Pearson. Despite the well documented benefits of using these techniques for offline analysis, the refining and petrochemical industries have been relatively slow in adopting the technology for online applications. This is surprising considering their enthusiastic and transformational adoption of more computationally intensive tools such as model predictive control.

In this presentation, we describe our experience in using multivariate methods to complement existing approaches and to create novel high value solutions.
