Today’s standards for safe execution in pilot plants and bench scale units are high.    Increasingly, management of change (MOC) procedures for pilot plants resemble those of larger commercial units.   The pilot plants can no longer be considered “tinker toys” for rapid testing of new configurations.      This change can be accommodated via increased use of multi-throughput experimentation and numerical modelling for simulation of process configurations, prior to pilot testing.

This paper will present approaches to optimizing safety and productivity in execution of R&D programs.
