Frequently, engineers are faced with design of systems that contain or process extremely hazardous materials. We will discuss and review both common and extraordinary precautions and design aspects to mitigate risks and address potential process hazards. Examples of designs and systems will be provided as well as methodologies to address processing of these materials.  Hazards addressed will include extremes of operating conditions as well as materials with extreme toxicities, pyrophoric properties, energetic compounds, and even nuclear materials.
