A methodology is presented wherein the tray efficiencies can be estimated from actual column temperature profiles compared with those predicted by simulations. The technique is based on a modification to the well-established O’Connell correlation for overall column efficiencies, using correction factors applied to the basic O’Connell correlation. The methodology has been used successfully to assess the efficiencies of existing columns, and for the design of new columns with minimal over-design and associated costs.
It is proposed to develop a database and correlations for correction factors to predict the individual stage (Murphree) efficiencies of various tray designs used in distillation columns. Such a database would have broad applicability to distillation in the refining and chemical industries, leading to more success and cost-effective design and column operations.
