In October 2010, the chemical engineering community lost a great friend and role model with the passing of James R. Fair. The timeless accomplishments of James R. Fair in the areas of distillation, absorption and stripping are well-known within the AIChE distillation community.   However, Jim was also equally interested in other chemical engineering areas and provided significant contributions in heat transfer, liquid and supercritical extraction, reactive distillation and adsorption.  Jim Fair’s accomplishments in these and some surprising areas will be presented.
