A membrane reactor with a liquid and gas flowing on different sides of the catalytic membrane is called catalytic diffuser. The gas diffuses through the macropores membrane layer and dissolves in the waste water at the interface (figure 1).

In this work we use a diffuser membrane reactor configuration for the elimination of formaldehyde in water. The active phase of catalytic membrane is gold nanoparticles that are dispersed onto the macropores of the membrane. The ceramic support is a tubular membrane of the company Pall-Exekia (α-alumina, T1-70), with dimensions: 15 cm length, inner diameter of 0.7 cm and outer diameter of 1.0 cm, with an average pore size of 0.2 microns. The catalytic test consists of a feed zone, a reaction zone and analysis zone. The catalytic membrane is mounted on a stainless steel cylinder jacket containing the ceramic membrane, this configuration was divided the reactor in two chambers, the liquid is fed to the inner membrane with a pump and the outer one was used for feeding the pure oxygen gas-phase, it imposed a differential pressure between the two phases of 0.5 bar, and the oxygen pressure was 5 bar. The oxidation of formaldehyde was studied at a temperature of 60 ° C with three different concentrations of formaldehyde, 200, 300, 500 ppm. In a time of 60 min was reached a conversion of 95% for concentrations of 100 and 300 ppm and 38% for 500 ppm. The reaction products were determined by GC. The catalytic membrane reactor shows good performance for this reaction.
