The development of models for the prediction of rates of fouling in heat exchangers handling crude oil are reviewed.

The extension of these models to handle fouling across a whole heat exchanger is outlined.

The extension of the model to handle fouling on the shell-side of the exchanger, fouling in exchangers fitted with tube inserts and in enhanced plate heat exchangers is reviewed.
