This work describes the need for a systematic approach for implementing Operator Training Simulators in order to obtain maximum trainee benefits. A great deal of effort and expense goes into the technical development of an Operator Training Simulator without a commensurate effort in planning for its implementation. Because of this, the benefits of the Operator Training Simulator (OTS) are not fully realized and after limited initial use – often for a new plant start up, an OTS falls into disuse. A proven systematic 5 step approach for implementing Operator Training Simulators over the long term is described in detail, along with testimonials from OTS users. The 5 steps include: Identification, Normal Operations, Start up and Shut down, Troubleshooting, and Optimization. The use of the OTS to develop applied skills such as Cooperation, Communication, Supervision and Situational Awareness are also discussed.

Examples of OTS Laboratory Exercises booklets and sample Training Exercises are also provided.
