One of the critical questions in sustainability is the extent to which the supply chains that underlie commercial activities can be made sustainable. However, addressing this question is impossible without the use of metrics to provide at least a semi-quantitative measure of progress towards or away from sustainability. The goal of this presentation is, therefore, to discuss sustainability metrics that could be applicable at the different scales from the process plant to the entire supply chain, and to outline how these could be used to design sustainable supply chains.
