When using fluidized beds as catalytic reactors, the particle size and shape can be optimized to get good fluidization behaviour. When using fluidized beds to produce or process particles, there is typically much less freedom in adapting the particle properties such that they show good fluidization behaviour. In recent years, more attention has been given to fluidization of “problematic” bed materials, such as wet particles, particles in the micron-range, nanoparticles, flakes, and rods. In this presentation, I will share some recent insights in the fluidization of such bed materials, and discuss approaches to improve their fluidization behaviour.
