Chemical-looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) has emerged to be one of the promising options for combustion of carbonaceous solid fuels, offering the promise of a reduced energy penalty for capture of carbon dioxide. The potential of the CLOU process for solid fuel combustion with copper oxide as an oxygen carrier has been demonstrated through process models and energy integration studies for steam production[1, 2].
Since the first reference to the use of CuO as an oxygen carrier by Lewis, Gilliland and Sweeney in 1951 followed by the seminal experiments on Chemical -looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) at Chalmers in the later part of the last decade, there has been considerable research on the topic. The research on CLOU covers a broad spectrum of topics, e.g. combustion fundamentals, oxygen carrier development, gas-solid reaction kinetics, fluidized beds, process engineering analysis. The talk will highlight upon the uniqueness of CLOU, and present a comparison with some of the established fluidized bed technologies (e.g. Fluid Catalytic Cracking regenerators and circulating fluidized bed coal combustors) from the perspective of process engineering considerations for deriving design insights.
