Characterization of the Properties of Flame Retardant PET Composites with Different Nano-Carbons

With the carbon microspheres ( CMSs) ,multiwalled carbon nanotubes ( MWNTs) and compounding of CMSs and MWNTs as added materials, the different flame retardant PET composite materials were prepared by the melt blending method£® The flame retardant properties, thermal stability, dispersion and mechanical property of CMSs /PET,MWNTs /PET and CMSs /MWNTs /PET composite materials were measured by limiting oxygen index (LOI) ,verticalburning method, thermogravimetry and scanning electron microscope£® The results show that the LOI value of adding 1%CMSs in PET is significantly increased by 28.9% with indistinctive anti-dripping£® Adding 1% MWNTs in PET can obtain the better anti-dripping property, the melting drips are reduced from 24 per minute to 6 per minute. Moreover, becauseof the synergistic effect between CMSs and MWNTs,the LOI value of CMSs /MWNTs /PET is up to 27.3% with the mass ratio of CMSs to MWNTs 1:2 in PET,and the melting drips reaches 4 per minute. Compared with the pure PET,the vertical burning grades of CMSs /PET,MWNTs /PET and CMSs /MWNTs /PET are improved from the national standard V-2 level to the V-0 level. The thermal stability of these three kinds of composite materials is increased and the mechanical property is decreased to a certain extent£®
