Significant challenges are facing the pharmaceutical industry in developing new drugs, and the high rate of attrition demands new approaches in research and development. Advances in modeling and simulations (M&S) have the promise to enable modern drug discovery and development in accelerating decision making. Model based drug development has shown value in increasing probability of success and M&S tools has become integrated in drug discovery and development processes. In this presentation an overview of the applications of M&S to support drug discovery and development projects will be discussed. Examples of modeling drug pharmacokinetics processes including absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination, as well as modeling systems pharmacology concepts will be presented. Strategies for implementation of M&S tools in drug discovery will be discussed and recommendations for a recipe of success will be proposed.
