Abstract

In this study, hot water and steam flooding tests were conducted on four unconsolidated sandstone core samples from Lower Fares. The hot water flooding tests were conducted at 60 and 80°C followed by steam injection at 153°C. Both horizontal and vertical core flooding displacement tests were conducted.

The main objective of this work was to study the efficiency of heavy oil recovery from the Lower Fares reservoir by hot water injections at various temperatures followed by steam injection. The results of these experiments can be used to determine the optimum recovery method for heavy oil. The results indicated an average cumulative oil recovery of 26.5% at 60°C and 44.7% at 80°C and that was ultimately increased to 68% by horizontal steam displacement and 77.5% by vertical steam displacement, respectively.
