The chemical engineering discipline continues to evolve and expand its reach, influenced by societal needs and advances in the basic sciences. Throughout this evolution two core elements of the discipline remain critical in chemical engineering practice, applied mathematics and reaction engineering. These have been the main focus areas of the graduate education and research activities of Professor Arvind Varma throughout his influential career. In this talk several salient examples from chemical engineering practice and technology will be described which underscore the need to sustain education and research in applied math and reaction engineering.
