Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP), as a widely used plastic additive for industry, has been demonstrated with a powerful function, i.e., in manipulating the size, shape, assembly patterns and morphology during the synthesis of a variety of magnetic nanostructures when served as surfactants. To be specific, through using a one-pot in-situ bottom up method, nanostructures including zero-dimensional nanoparticles (solid spherical, core-shell, hollow configuration), one-dimensional (nanochains); assembly patterns including one-, two-, and three dimensional morphologies were synthesized by either varying the surfactant-reactant mole ratio or the surfactant molecular weights. In addition, for some nanostructures, the crystalline phase has also been controlled. The different nanostructures also resulted in significant difference in their magnetic properties including saturation magnetization and coercivity. The nanostructure formation mechanisms were studied systematically, and the bonding density, strength, and the steric hinderance were found to be responsible for the difference in forming these nanostructures.1,2,3
