We begin by describing the impact of Professor Larry Evans’ leadership in promoting the technology training and industrial applications of process simulation, advanced process control and supply chain optimization in the Asia-Pacific, particularly in China. We then focus our discussion on CO2 capture from power plant flue gas. While amine-based CO2 capture systems have been designed since 1927, concern over anthropomorphic climate change sparked renewed interest in the 1980’s.  Subsequent research has led to significant advances such as well-fit thermodynamic models, rigorous rate-based models for distillation, and improved process designs.  The aims of this presentation are to (1) summarize proposed process improvements; (2) demonstrate a model integrating all of these improvements into one process in Aspen Plus; and (3) report an optimized design.  Additionally, we report the use of a chemical heat pump for waste heat recovery with predicted amine-based solvent regeneration energy well below 2 GJ/tonne CO2 captured.
