Decanter centrifuges have long been used to classify kaolin slurry for various coating products involving coating particles below two microns.

In this paper, a model has been developed for particle classification. The paper illustrates systematically how various products can be produced accurately with the help of the model meeting the necessary specification for which different percentages of the particles should be either below 1 micron, or 2 microns, as required by the product grade. This approach is further back-up by examples.

Traditionally this has been carried out by trial-and-error by changing feed rate and bowl speed, and fine tuning by changing differential speeds and pool levels.
