An innovative technique of sewage sludge drying system combined with composting was proposed to establish self-energy closed system of sludge treatment. This sludge drying system uses the heat generating during composting and carbonized sludge is utilized for the enhancement of drying rate. In the experiment, drying and composting behaviors of sludge was studied. A fundamental drying experiment of sludge contained carbonized sludge was carried out by hot air heating and compost experiment of the mixture was also conducted to examine the effect of carbonized sludge addition on drying rate. From the results, the enhancement effect of drying and composting of sludge by carbonized sludge addition was confirmed by examination using a lab-scale of disposer (1 kg/day). Sludge with 60%-wet base in moisture content could be dried successfully to lower moisture content than 30%-wet base by only exothermic heat during composting without supplying any auxiliary energy from the outside, and the treatment time was reduced by mixing carbonized sludge and sludge.
