256616 Green and High Efficient Fuel Ethanol Production From Sugarcane Bagasse

Sugarcane bagasse (SCB), leftover stalks after juice extraction, were pretreated using liquid hot water (LHW) to remove most hemicellulose and part lignin of lignocellulose. In order to improve the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of LHW-pretreated SCB, Tween80, a non-ionic surfactant proved to enhance enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated biomass in high lignin content, was applied in this research. It was found that the optimal concentration of Tween80 can increase glycan conversion of LHW-pretreated SCB from 44.9% (control) to 78.1%. A laboratory facility with plate-and-frame impeller (PFI) was applied to conduct batch and fed-batch hydrolysis and the process of fed-batch hydrolysis prior to simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF). After hydrolyzing LHW-pretreated SCB for 120 h, the total sugar concentration and glycan conversion obtained from fed-batch hydrolysis are 91.6 g/L and 68.3%, respectively, which are 9.7 g/L and 7.3% more than those from batch hydrolysis. The ethanol production and theoretical yield obtained from the process of fed-batch hydrolysis prior to SSF are 55.4 g/L and 88.3%, respectively, which are 15.5 g/L and 24.7% higher than those from separate fed-batch hydrolys and fermentation.
