Hadi Mahabadi, Xerox Research Centre of Canada, Mississauga, ON, Canada

The Emulsion Aggregation Toner Technology (EA) that was invented, developed and commercialized by Xerox Corporation represents a breakthrough in the chemistry and chemical engineering processes for preparing toner materials using nanotechnology methodology. The innovation that uses a patented manufacturing scale semi-continuous emulsion polymerization and other proprietary processes to produce nano-scale toner ingredients with unique properties and the first-of-a-kind application of a nanotechnology methodology to generate micron-sized composite particles with tunable morphology, size and structure.

The technical challenges faced by chemical engineers and chemists during the early stages of product development will be presented.Since its commercialization, Xerox has launched three EA toner designs with the fourth generation on the horizon that will continue to deliver the “wow” factor to the customers and satisfy their unmet needs. The advantages of this technology that include performance, economic, social and environmental benefits will be covered in this talk.
