A variety of drivers have been identified for integrating sustainability into the chemical industry including demand by customers, new legislative initiatives, continuous focus on cost reduction and increased resource efficiency, enhanced reputation and alignment of company core values to name a few.  While sustainability is regarded as an important issue, in many organizations it is slow to reach the core business strategy and to be implemented across the entire organization.  The challenges evolve around making this integration visible and achieving the necessary engagement and implementation within the organization to obtain the business value from following sustainable practices.

Cytec Industries has been focusing on integrating sustainability into business practices and R&D and operational activities for some time.  The emphasis has been on developing organizational support across all functions while developing tools that bring awareness and practice to key users in the development and manufacture of products.  The discussion will cover the progress of this effort to integrate sustainability into the Cytec business process, and the development of key tools and in-house support for these initiatives.
