Population Balance Modeling of Particles with Random Behavior. Application to Gene Regulatory Processes

Population balance models for system of particles with random behavior lead to parabolic partial differential equations with “diffusion” terms acquired from random dynamics of internal coordinates. This talk will demonstrate the origin of such population balance equations, develop their formulation, methods of solution and application to gene regulatory processes in microorganisms. The population balance models are shown to display striking variations from the popular single cell approach that has been in vogue in the literature. Phenomena such as the transfer of drug resistance among bacteria are exciting applications of this approach.
