The development of technologies to facilitate the electrophoretic separation of proteins can rely on fundamental principles of chemical engineering. In addition, there are a wide variety of applications of protein electrophoresis which can begin to address important problems in bioprocess engineering and biomedical engineering. This presentation will review a series of research efforts that begin with protein analysis technologies and include applications of two-dimensional protein electrophoresis in the diagnosis and understanding of neurodegenerative disease. An overarching theme is the impact of American Electrophoresis Society members and meetings on these efforts.
