Water desalination system design for public utilities focuses on delivering the lowest cost water and the emphasisi is on both capital costs and energy usage. Whereas these are important to the Navy, there are additional shipboard drivers that outweigh these traditional design goals. In this talk we will go through Navy shipboard desalination systems and discuss how the Navy is switching from distillation to reverse osmosis, what the design drivers are, and the goals for the next generation shipboard desalination systems.
