Abstract: Synthesis of a special amphoteric surfactant by common cation is described. In this study we employing the direct sulfonation of commercially available dodecyl dimethylbenzylammonium chloride (1227) with chlorosulfonic acid, investigated dodecyl sulfobenzyl betaine , which differ from the conventional sulfobetaines in that a benzyl linkage bridges the quaternary nitrogen and sulfonate group rather than an aliphatic linkage. The reaction carried out smoothly with good to excellent conversion rate(96%),and the crude products were recrystallized from absolute ethanol in nearly quantitative yields. As it’s lime sope dispersing requirements value is 3, the calciumion stability could grow up to 3500ppm ,it comparable to or better than a high-phosphate control in detergency performance. What’s more, in the condition of strong acid, a kind of the dodecyl sulfobenzyl betaine could show outstanding rheological properties.
