In 2009, the US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) recommended to AIChE and ABET to develop requirements related to understanding safety hazards and how to prevent them. The resulting new ABET requirements are anticipated to take effect in 2012. It would not be unusual if some administrations of universities offering chemical engineering degrees were concerned or even upset about the new requirements.
In this short presentation, I will attempt to address the concern over the new requirements by discussing a broad range of benefits to the quality of the students' chemical engineering education and students' future employability, as well as some additional benefits that may accrue to the overall campus experience based on implementing the new requirements.
