Mass and Energy balances is taught with the following components: 1) an experiment requiring the students to observe and model a transient energy balance in a series of steps comprising a semester-long project; 2) a hybrid format in which the class attends lecture once or twice a week with one or two engaging active learning experiences spread out through each week; and 3) homework is not graded, but rather, the students are given credit for the submission of complete solutions and are provided solutions after the fact. Most of this is performed through Blackboard.
