Access to clean drinking water is a critical issue for sustainable development. Separations technologies can play a key role in purifying water for drinking, cooking and hygiene, while reducing fuel consumption and air pollution associated with boiling water for pathogen destruction. This session will focus on emerging technologies for point-of-use and community-scale water purification. Technologies of interest include filtration (ceramic, sand media, and polymers), disinfection, flocculation, and electrochemical processes. Particular emphasis should be paid to purification costs and issues related to water treatment technology adoption in developing countries.
