Transportation lies at the nexus of three major influences affecting today's national agenda: energy security, environment, and economy. During the last five years, it has been framed against a backdrop of unstable fuel prices and growing public debate about climate change and the “end of the oil age.” The advent of more biofuels and hybrid vehicles and the displacement of conventional liquid fuels with electricity signal a paradigm shift in our country's approach to sustainably supporting the economic backbone of transportation. This talk will address the impact opportunities transportation R&D presents, and offer insight into technology-based solutions that Oak Ridge National Laboratory and its many public/private partners are working to provide.
