Milling, an important component of pharmaceutical manufacturing, is carried out in equipment in which comminution occurs non-uniformly in different regions with the added complexity of nonlinear particle interaction. Markov chains represent an interesting alternative to population balance modeling to accommodate both of the foregoing features. This paper shows a development of Markov chains with strategies for model identification from performance data.
