The excitement over a potential new fuel source can ignore the need to examine the potential legal and regulatory requirements under which the new operation must operate. Misunderstandings of legal and regulatory requirements can result in costly delay and public mistrust of even the most promising new technologies. Early and continuing communication with regulators may slow initial progress, but ignoring legal requirements can result in lawsuits, fines and court orders.
