Membrane module designs today are very similar to those developed 30 years ago for the first desalination units. However, our understanding of the underlying physics of transport within modules has progressed significantly. Professor Sirkar has made seminal contributions to this body of knowledge and provided a unifying framework for analyzing performance based on the nature of the contacting phases and flow profiles within the module. The impact of Professor Sirkar's work on the future of module design is discussed.
