For six decades, Detroit Stoker Company has been designing and supplying combustion systems for a wide variety of biomass fired applications. With current public concerns regarding global warming and Green House gases, these combustion systems and fuels utilized have become more sophisticated. This paper will present experiences of not only North American but also European facilities with examples of emission performance and ability to provide equipment for a wide range of fuel types, fuel moistures and opportunity fuel generated from process areas and agricultural waste streams. In addition, use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and results from pilot scale combustion testing will be discussed and how these tools assisted in design and supply of these commercial combustion systems.
