Visualization of Colloidal Disk Assembly by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy

Peng He, Andres F. Mejia, and Zhengdong Cheng. Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843

We develop image capturing and processing methods to directly visualize and quantify colloidal disk particles assembly via confocal laser scanning microscopy. Monodisperse fluorescent colloidal discs are prepared by the electrospray of wax and followed dye adsorption. The particles are dispersed in agarose gels to freeze the Brownian motion for static images of individual particles. Disc particle assembly is induced by evaporation either in drops or in de-gassing PDMS chambers. Image processing algorithm will be developed to detect discs and their assembly and to rebuild the 3-D shape from the confocal image volumes. By means of these methods we are going to quantify the morphology of wax disc particles by electrospray and the assembly.
