Hot-Water Extraction and Forest Biorefinery

Thomas E. Amidon and Shije Liu. SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, 1 Forestry Drive, Syracuse, NY 13210

Hot-water extraction is an efficient technique to separate hemicelluloses and extractives from woody biomass. In the absence of mineral acid or base, it is more environmentally beneficial for the recovery of chemicals from the extraction liquor. Membrane technology can applied for this purpose. The residual woody biomass has unique properties for improved solid products production.
