Strategic Implementation of Single-Use Technology in Fixed Equipment Scale up Facility

Bryan V. Pingitor, Process R&D, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, One Squibb Drive, New Brunswick, NJ 08903

As companies aspire to “disposabilize” fixed equipment facilities, numerous factors influence decision-making strategy, such as effective space and manpower utilization, investment costs, process enhancements (“value”), and facility switch-over downtime. During evaluation of viable single-use candidates for inclusion in “hybrid” facilities, process control, data acquisition, and trending capabilities must be considered. Logical integration of single-use technology to replace and/or complement fixed equipment can introduce versatility in facilities without compromise to overall process objectives and equipment functionality.
