With increasing regularity, drinking water facilities are combining ozonation and powdered activated carbon (PAC) treatments in a combined process. In addition, there are often capped filters with a granulated activated carbon (GAC) cap. This research reports the effects of adding the ozonation process on the effectiveness of the activated carbon and whether there is an oxidation of the activate carbon and whether this results in a change in surface properties. At the same time, the effects of the AC on the ozone concentrations and whether there is a degradation of ozone by the presence of AC is investigated. The results of this investigation will be reported.
