#39 - Safety in Design and Operation - Pilot Plants and Unit Operation Labs: I (12006)
Most Pilot Plants and University Unit Operations Labs involve the use of hazardous chemicals (flammable and reactive liquids, combustible solids, etc.) and hazardous processes (high pressure hydrogenation, nitration, etc.). This session invites papers addressing design methods and operating procedures used in Pilot Plant and University Unit Operations Lab (including the Chem-E Car competition). These can address items such as safe handling of hazardous chemicals, safe procedures for various unit operations and unit processes, design of reaction systems, and other topics relevant to process hazards encountered in these specialized operations. The session would welcome papers dealing with integration of safety in all phases of a Pilot Plant and University Unit Operations Lab operation cycle. Phases would include Design, Engineering and Construction, Startup, Operations, Decommissioning, and Demolition.
