When the kinetic energy can not overcome the potential energy in the compressor diffuser and a reverse in flow occurs thus reversing the loads or forces in the compressor e.g. the compressor trying to reverse rotate or surge. This paper/presentation will discuss the causes of surge. It will discuss many case histories inculding many visual examples of damage to centrifugal compressor system due to surge.
