Ramon Gonzalez, Chem. Engg., RICE, PO Box 1892, Houston, TX 77251

Although biofuels such as biodiesel and bioethanol represent a sustainable, secure, renewable, and environmentally safe alternative to fossil fuels, major scientific and technological breakthroughs are needed for them to become economically viable. Our talk will focus on emerging platforms for the production of biofuels and biochemicals from renewable resources. Special attention will be given to topics relevant to the biological conversion of feedstocks such as cellulosic sugars and crude glycerin along with the integration of fuels and chemicals production (i.e., biorefinery).
