Developing Particle Capabilities for New Applications

George Fotou, M. Oljaca, and T. Kodas. Cabot Superior Micropowders, Cabot Corporation, 5401 Venice Avenue, NE, Albuquerque, NM 87113

Many important applications are relying on properties of engineered fine particles to provide desired product performance and reliability. Cabot Corporation is pursuing new business opportunities by interacting with end-users and customers to develop understanding of application requirements and by expanding its core capabilities. The present paper discusses the development of particle technology and processes for synthesis and treatment of engineered particles and addresses the importance of understanding the applications requirements. The implementation of particle technology innovations in the design of engineered particle solutions for catalysis, purification, electronics and other applications will be discussed. The advantages of aerosol synthesis routes to produce products with superior performance will be described. The presentation will also discuss the manufacturing challenges associated with integration of engineered particle into inks, pastes, and other application-specific product intermediates.
