Adhesion Strength of Freshly Deposited and Annealed Nanoparticles Layers

The adhesion strength of flame-made SnO2 nanoparticles on glass substrates was measured by gas impingement. These particles were produced by FSP (Flame spray synthesis) and directly deposited during 180 s by thermophoresis on a cooled glass substrate held over the flame. These particle-laden substrates were annealed to 200 – 600 C for 4 hours to produce different particle-substrate bonding states. All such substrates underwent gas impingement tests by a high pressure (1.8 bar) nitrogen jet (14 l/min) in a stagnation flow configuration. Adhesion strength increased with annealing temperature, with adhesion strength increase from 36 to 44 Pa from 25° C to 600° C. The apparent increase in strength is attributed to increase cohesion between the particles and the substrate by sintering and bridging.
