Uop Pilot Plants – Developing Technologies And Careers

Guy Woodle, Kerry Crosby, and Daniel Pintar. UOP LLC, 25 East Algonquin Road, Des Plaines, IL 60017

UOP LLC, a Honeywell company, has been developing technology for the petroleum refining, gas processing, and petrochemical industries for over 90 years. One key to UOP's success is a fully functional Experimental Development Department (EDD) that is accountable for design, construction, and operation of pilot plants. UOP's EDD is closely aligned with the Development Department, which takes information generated in pilot plants and transforms it into viable commercial plant designs. Numerous pilot plant and process development career opportunities exist at UOP.

UOP's EDD designs, constructs, and operates pilot plants for product development, process development, and commercial support. Specialized skills are required to meet this diverse pilot plant demand. Pilot plant engineers must understand the technique of scaling-down process designs to ensure information collected on the pilot scale can be applied to the commercial scale. Other key skills for pilot plant engineers include reviewing experimental design, developing operational improvements, and advancing test methodology. At UOP the majority of pilot plant operation is carried out by non-degreed employees who have developed specific, unique skills and knowledge in the equipment and operation of pilot plants. These unique skills are developed on the job and are critical to the success of the organization.
