Batch Plus, an AspenTech utility, was used by the R&D organization to investigate the feasibility of available options – process modifications and/or plant expansion - for a commercial manufacturing process anticipating a throughput increase. The Batch Plus model aided the quick identification of the time- and size-limiting equipment in the existing process. Thereafter, new process scenarios were churned out for the existing process by proposing additional equipment such as reactors, mixed tanks and filtration units, such that the incremental capital cost per incremental throughput is minimal. Having the Batch Plus model built for the existing process also facilitated the simulation of process scenarios involving new process modifications, which have been demonstrated only in lab scale, to apriori evaluate their core impact on the throughput. The variable and additional capital cost components that are influenced by the cycle time, batch size and additional equipment, were taken into account for assessment of each new process scenario. The outcome of this exercise was a set of recommendations for future R&D activities and plant-expansion efforts, towards achieving the goal of higher throughput at the lowest cost.
