Shell wanted to move new technology into commercially operating units. No pilot facilities existed for incrementally testing and proving the technology, so the decision was made to use one of the existing commercial units as a "big pilot plant". What were the obstacles encountered and overcome? Was the test successful? Did our reputations survive? This paper will describe how this plant test was proposed, managed, completed and the technology ultimately adopted as normal operating practice.
