With depleting oil resources and negative environmental impacts associated with use of biofuels, there is renewed interest in biomass based fuels. Now, edible oil like Pongamia, jatropha, algemone, mahua, castor etc can be used for the production of biodiesel. Pongamia pinata is multi purpose plant with many attributes and enormous potential for biodiesel production. Given the ballooning cost of importing crude oil, biodiesel from pongamia pinata makes eminent sense as supplement as it not only burns cleanly than petroleum diesel, it does not require any modification in the present ignition engines for diesel or even to the current distribution infrastructure of storage tank and petrol stations that deliver fuel diesel to the customer. Karanji oil diesel blend is an alternate fuel for diesel engine.
