Reactor Scale-down for Pilot Plant, Bench Scale, and Multi-Throughput Units

Joseph B. Powell, Chemical Process Technology, Shell Global Solutions US Inc., Westhollow Technology Center, P. O. Box 1380, Houston, TX 77251-1380

Cost-effective fast-track process development requires consideration of the minimum scale needed to obtain reliable data. Often, the optimal laboratory or pilot-plant reactor for reliably assessing kinetics and selectivities will look nothing like the ultimate commercial reactor. This session will review reactor selection and sizing for laboratory and pilot studies, and will present a number of examples of successful scale down to address specific project needs.
