Engineered Polyurethane Surfaces for Drug Delivery, Blood Compatibility and Tissue Engineering

Buddy Ratner, Departments of Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering, University of Washington, Foege Building, Box 355061, Seattle, WA 98195

Professor Stuart Cooper has pioneered polyurethanes with important contributions to their physical characterization, synthesis and biomedical applications. In this talk, work from the University of Washington, often building on the platform established by Dr. Cooper, will be discussed. First methods to use polyurethanes for controlled release will be presented. Then surface structures with enhanced blood compatibility will be presented. Finally a new class of biodegradable polyurethanes will be introduced.
